What is your Favorite Rift of All Time

Guitar riffs are the backbone of any legendary rock song. They are the the main melodic line that people remember, and they can range from a simple chord progression, to a lead. This article is opinion based, and even choosing a favorite riff as a guitarist isn’t something that I can easily do. There are too many great and catchy songs, but there can be only one.

The first one, and easiest to play that comes to mind is Deep Purple’s Smoke on The Water. This is one that anyone can play, and its usually the first thing everyone learns. I even heard an Ocarina salesmen playing at a renaissance festive, but easy to play doesn’t equal my favorite.

This will be a bit surprising, and is the product of Eddy Van Halen and Micahel Jackson, with beat it. A great riff has to stick into your memory, but it also has to encompass the entirety of a song, and beat it does this very well. You can strip away the drums and Michael Jackson, and that riff still caries everything musical within it. The combination of rock’n roll, and two of the most prolific artists ever, makes this great.
